Just Three Things
Since I’ve been posting a little much lately, I’ve been forcing myself to put my longer posts on schedules one day at a time, however, these three small things simply can’t wait.
First is the billboard that’s been put up by the Mission Gathering Christian Church apologizing for Prop 8 being passed in the name of God. Props to these people for having the guts to speak out about this and admit much of the cause being religious (or at least in the name of religion).
Second is the sad news that UK schools have begun to stop teaching children about the Holocaust to keep from offending Muslim parents who deny the Holocaust. What lesson does this teach us? Nothing, really, because it isn’t really news at all. Religion has been messing with education for ages now. But I’m sure if you’re a Christian reader who dislikes Muslims, you got awfully upset, and rightfully so. Now see how we atheists feel?
Last but most certainly not least is the moving post by Womanist Musings on poverty and how it destroys the lives of real people, something we often like to forget. A small quote,
Food, shelter, clothing and education are all human needs, they are not arbitrary desires and yet we have commodified them. By placing a dollar value on the necessities of life we have assured the suffering of millions across the globe. What makes one being more entitled to food than another? A CEO does not work any harder than a single mom trying desperately to keep a roof over the head of her children.
“Second is the sad news that UK schools have begun to stop teaching children about the Holocaust to keep from offending Muslim parents who deny the Holocaust.”
Holy crap! I am scared that this kind of thing can happen in America with Evolution. People like Ben Stein are on the wrong side of that one. We should teach facts. I think that educational systems are used to strengthen control by indoctrinating people with subservient behavior patterns first, and to educate second. I think that educational systems should teach critical thinking as fundamental to scholarship. Because it is. Question everything.
I fully agree with the Womanist Musings post as well.
