O’Reilly: Holidays For Christians Only
Yup. Bill O’Reilly’s done it again. He (and by extension his viewers, since we all know they are incapable of intelligent thought if they actually believe the crap that comes out of his mouth) thinks the holidays belong to Christians exclusively. Or that’s what he’s implied, and obviously believes, at least, when he becomes outraged that non-Christians put up a sign of their viewpoint next to an X-mas display in front of a government building. Oh, the horror!
O’Reilly, as usual, has made up a war that doesn’t exist, one on X-mas. In an awe-inspiring display of intellectual dishonesty, he claims that X-mas is no different from MLK day, because ‘these days both honor men who happen to be religious’.
Oh, Lordy.
Now while I’m sure you’ve already heard all about this from other blogs, I’ve spotted some extra, less obvious lunacy. I figured I may as well send him a letter. I may even get the nerve to try and call in tommorrow and read this off (as if he’d let me). Not that I actually expect and logical arguments to be put on air.
Oh, Bill.
Firstly, regardless of how un-Constitutional it is to have a federal holiday respecting only one religion yet ignore all the others, X-mas is a federal holiday. That means that every U.S. citizen has a right to participate. X-mas was secularized the moment it was made an official federal U.S. holiday, thanks to the Founder’s mandate for separation of Church and State. This is why we call these times ‘the Holidays’, because all of us celebrate them regardless of faith or lack of it. No religion has an exclusive claim to it, period. The idea that atheists and other non-Christians are not allowed to display holiday spirit in their own way when Christians are allowed to do so freely and on our tax dollars is lunacy.
Most people are aware that X-mas, Easter, Halloween, etc, were originally Pagan holidays. The Pagan elements of these holidays still shine through: Easter eggs for fertility rites, carved pumpkins to chase spirits away, and Yule logs for sun worship. These holidays existed long before Christianity came about. Even if Christmas were not a federal holiday and thus secularized, Christianity has only transformed these holidays into its own. Winter is a time of celebration around the world, in most cultures, for those with and without gods. The winter holidays belong to Pagans as much as they belong to atheists, Christians, Jews, Africans, Muslims, Hindus, etc. Bill O’Reilly, you and your religion have no right to exclude others, nor should you be so small-minded as to think that everyone in America is Christian and thus that we ‘don’t belong’.
The idea that having a small placard up as our only voice during the holidays is war on ‘your’ Christmas (that Christianity stole from the Pagans, of course), suggests that you think non-Christians are less American and less worthy of having the same rights as you simply because of our beliefs. That idea is the same one our Founders fought against. Think twice before calling anyone else un-American.
An atheist celebrating the holidays, American-style.
Bump O’Biley. He is the biggest hypocrite on Faux News. What was he doing talking dirty to Andrea Mackey about Luffas and Falaffels when he had a wife and kids at home? That joker needs to take his pretend Pulitzer prize and retire.
Oh hell…I had no idea he had a wife and kids. I feel so bad for them. That’s…gross and sad at the same time!
I hate Billo-the-Clown as Keith Olbermann calls him. The group that is responsible for the sign is the Freedom From Religion Foundation (http://www.ffrf.org). I am a very proud member of the FFRF, and I am very proud of that sign.
Billo says “There’s no reason whatsoever to allow an anti-religious sign to be posted alongside a Christmas display”, but of course he does not mention the separation of church and state and how it is unconstitutional for the government to promote one religious view over the others. This is government property and I don’t think there should be a nativity scene there at all. It would be better if there were no reason to put the FFRF sign there in the first place.
FFRF fights for separation of church and state. It is intellectually dishonest to call this a war on X-mas. That is nothing more than propaganda. Nobody is telling churches or individual people what they can or can not display. It only comes into question when it is on government property (which the media tends to call public property, which it is of course, but it gives ignorant people the idea that someone is trying to stop them from being religious ‘in public’ which is something different.
O’Reilly is a real jerk, and ignorant beyond measure, as is anyone who takes him seriously.
Anyway, Excellent letter Yvette!
Very nice! I hope he reada it – though I’m doubtful.
Happy Festivus! ;-)
I just got an email from FFRF saying the sign was stolen haha. I don’t know why it’s funny to me – I guess it’s funny that people think it’s such a threat. Of course I am also very disappointed. So much for ‘thou shalt not steal’. Sin is ok I guess if you’re on God’s side. Haha.

Oh man that’s too funny. What’s best is that according to their Bible whoever did it now is never, ever, ever going to Heaven. XD
Loved your letter. While I don’t watch Billo, or Fox news (since the 2000 election), I hear about his lunacy on Keith Oberman.
An interesting tidbit, for those very religious among us – the number of the anti-christ is 666. In numerology the letters for the number 6 is f, o, and x.
Merry Holidays!
Bahahaha, that’s awesome. I had no idea. Mind if I spread that around? Hehehe…
Feel free. It came to me shortly after the 2000 election. I was toying around with numerology, and each letter is numbered A=1, B=2, etc. When you get to double digit numbers like O=15, you reduce to a single digit by addition. So FOX = 666.
I thought is was SO appropriate! They really are “The Beast”.
Good letter. O’Reilly’s bogus war is tiresome. And, Juedz, I love the numerology bit – that’s too funny.
You people should be more empathetic to poor, brain addled Billo. Don’t you realize that he’s simply following the American way? He has figured out how to pander to the ignorant and bigoted in this country, and is able to make quite a few almighty bucks in the process. He and Ann Coulter are laughing all the way to the bank.
There’s a formula there. Say outrageous things that confirm the beliefs of the ignorant, and they’ll feel better about themselves, in the process paying him for his venomous lies. Billo draws down a fine salary from Fix News, not to mention writing bestselling books. Do you think he donates all that money to the causes he creates and espouses? How about Coulter? No way. It’s all about cashing in on the bigots in this country. They love him (and Coulter, and Hannity, and…) becuase they can point to him and say “Look. There’s someone who agrees with me.”
Capitalism at it’s finest.
The worst thing you do to to him is take him seriously, as if he’s a legitimate newscaster. Olbermann does it right, by showing him to be the big buffoon he is, and making fun of him. But he won’t go away with logic and argument. No, the only way to get rid of him is if people stop paying him, and Murdoch is making too much money on him, so that won’t happen.
That’s true Spanish, too many people can’t help themselves from taking those two seriously. Maybe it just goes to show how bad Fundamentalism and far right ideals really are.
Looks like we’ve got a notorious plagiarist on our hands. He stole a blog posting from me — word for word — and has done the same to you.

Don’t alert him that you know about it just yet. I am researching ALL of his blog postings and am going to let every original blogger know. Almost every single one of his blogs is plagiarized, whole hog, from another blog or an article. Even from scientific journals!! So far I’ve found about 30, and I’m not done yet! Blog about it if you want to. I did.

Wow.
While it’s possible he’s just trying to aggregate, posting my entire post and not linking is definitely plagiarism.
Keep me updated and THANK YOU for letting me know! :)
I guess I should be flattered? o_O?
Should let you know, linking him would likely alert him that you know. :)
