Myself
I started this blog over four years ago, when I was sixteen, liberal, and naive. I had recently broken out of a very long period of self-discovery, or more specifically, I had broken out of a conservative mindset and had begun questioning my theist beliefs. Since then, my opinions have evolved…for the better, I hope. An “ultra-leftist” according to my old AP Stylebook, my opinions follow a logic that not everyone will agree with. I’m an ex-journalism major, now an 20-year-old anthropology major seeking to transfer to a university, with an interest in the reasons behind religion, spirituality, morality, sexuality, and social organization. I am atheist, and oppose belief in the supernatural. I am feminist, and support breaking both men and women free of tight cultural bonds. I am anti-racist and believe in acknowledging white privilege and that education for both whites and non-whites can help our racially stratified society. I’m a shy nerd who adores video games, roleplays, and am probably not the kind of girl you’d look at and think, “hey, she’s argued that cannibalism isn’t morally wrong”. I enjoy research, debate, and kitties.

I accept applications for guest posts, simply email me with the contact information provided above. If you are interested in contributing regularly to this blog or being a co-author, I am happy to discuss the matter. Maintaining a blog is not fun work, and I am happy to do the work for anyone wishing to contribute.

Since I don’t get asked things so much as told, here are some of the things I’ve been told constantly over my four + years writing here that I may as well start a “Frequently Said Things” spot. Here we are:
- You are going to hell. I’d very much be concerned if there were any proof. Please, do show it to me.
- [Insert Bible passage here]. I’m afraid that doesn’t work on me.
- You are just angry at God, or rebelling. It is not your god I hate, but your religion and your scripture which both promote bigotry, genocide, child abuse, war, and ignorance.
- You will grow out of atheism/anti-capitalism. This is a cop-out, and an easy way to write off someone’s opinions that you disagree with but don’t have the ability to argue against.
- You can see God in everything. You can see the work of evolution in everything.
- Environmentalism/atheism/evolutionism is a religion, and you need just as much faith as me! Environmentalism is the opinion that our natural resources are precious and should be protected. Atheism is a lack of belief in any god. “Evolutionism” is a myth, people who understand and agree with the scientific theory of evolution are simply accepting the best science out there.
- You are imagining racism and sexism. And yet, I provide the proof for it.
Liberalism is a part of the normal human development cycle usually grown out of by the mid-twenties to the early thirties. I wish you success on your road to self discovery and I will greet you with open arms when you outgrow this phase and enter into the realistic phase of you life.
Chicken Hammer… that rates among the stupidest things I have read lately, and I have read some pretty stupid things. At 45, a trained professor of philosophy, and person of the world I would resent your remark were you worthy of it. Your logic is absurd and finding a single elderly liberal (of which there are many) would disprove you.
The only thing you need to learn to open is your mind. And if you are not in agreement with the posts of Yvette then read elsewhere… they might make the equivalent of “pop-up books” for the intellectually challenged on the web – probably one by Rush Limbaugh.
Yvette, sorry to rant at this twit on your blog, but I have had enough of simple minded idiots thinking they a knowledgable when they are clearly ignorant.
Any way, I would love to chat. I have some things I am working on that could use help.
Thanks and sorry ~ Rob
No problem Rob. :)
It’s a problem for either side of a debate when there are feelings of “I’m completely right and can’t admit any other possibility”.
And I wish you luck learning you’re not a god walking the earth, and learning that robbery does not deserve death. I doubt you’ll learn, though.
Don’t worry, Yvette. Conservative pretentiousness is just a normal phase that older people grow out of by … well … never.

haha! that guy is insane!!!
Woah.
Good blog, Yvette. Communism, capitalism, socialism, etc all have limitations. Anyone who criticizes any of them based on their extremist appliction is missing the point. Human societies (if Hegel is to be believed) operate like a jazz jam session with melodies, harmonies, rhythms and counterpoints being picked up from other musicians all the time. Neither the USSR nor Maoist China were ever truly Communist just as the US, Great Britain and Brazil are not truly Capitalist. We pick up ideologies and put them down as it suits us and all societies are borrowing from each other constantly.
The Buddhists claim that all pain comes from attachment to the world as it is and resistance to inexorable changes. We must strive to be like water; flowing around obstacles while we erode them drop by drop. Before you know it we have cut the Grand Canyon, but only if we all continue to flow; never becoming stagnant and never standing still.
Thank you for your idealism and willingness to question the status quo. Together we will change the world and the world will change us.
This 74 year old Pro Iraq War Agnostic Atheist Activist Sez:
MOST intelligent Americans (unless programmed other wise) start out being liberals. Then, as they age, gaining in life’s experiences and in world knowledge, they do what most former Liberals do. They become Conservatives!
One excellent example of this was Ronald Reagan.
And yes, there are MANY Conservative Atheists other than myself. Two are my (genius) friends Eugene Volokh and Cliff Walker.
Eugene is one of the top legal minds in the United States and whose blog gets over 25,000 hits Per Day.
http://www1.law.ucla.edu/~volokh/
And Cliff has the super popular website called Positive Atheism.
http://www.positiveatheism.org/
You can find many more of we CONSERVATIVE Atheists by simply goggling for us.
Neil
How sadly irrational to proclaim that one’s side is entirely right and the other side is entirely wrong. Are you really older than myself? It doesn’t show.
I have to say, every time I come to bluelinchpin.wordpress.com there is another remarkable article to read. One of my friends was talking to me about this topic several weeks ago. I think I will send them the link here and see what they say.
Yvette, YOU are IRRATIOAL as I NEVER SAID what it seems you think I did.
YOU should take both a course in how to greatly improve your Reading Compehension Skills as well as one on LOGIC as you suffer from a lack of it’s use.
Neil
You’re almost right. If only you didn’t use capitals like a half-drunk Doctor Johnson and knew how to proofread for basic errors of spelling and grammar, she’d have no excuse whatsoever.
I’m goggling as I type, Mr Reinharfdt.
It is very easy to be an “ultra-leftist” when you were born and raised in a country like the US. And most probably your family has been there for a lot of generations now.
However, come to Eastern Europe and ask people belonging to my parent’s and grandparent’s generation about how it was to live in an “ultra leftist” system for 50 years.
Get a LIFE !!!
It’s also very easy to be outright ignorant, but I’m not flaming you. How about intelligently discussing any particular disagreements you have?
“It is not your god I hate, but your religion and your scripture which both promote bigotry, genocide, child abuse, war, and ignorance.”
And here I thought we were getting along rather well, Yvette. :(
;)

Hey, stumbled across your blog and am glad I found it. :-) Two of my biggest interested are atheism and feminism, so I look forward to hearing what you have to say. Take care ^_^

This whole Wikileaks fiasco is pretty crazy. You should check out http://voteonwikileaks.com. It’s a recently launched website that seems to be going viral. They got something like 50,000 visitors in the first 24 hours of launch. It’s sort of like a crowdsourced collection of arguments against and for Wikileaks. As a blog owner, you’d probably find some of the opinions there a good read.
